Black doesn’t let himself be deterred, and renews the threat of ... g5-g4. Even if pushing that pawn immediately looks dangerous in view of White’s ideas of Qd2-h6+, Black wants to press ahead anyway.

21.g4?

The white player makes a clear mistake. He wants to drastically remove ideas of ... g5-g4 from the position, but neglects to consider the position of his king. Since the pawn chain g2-f3-e4, aimed at blunting Black’s light-squared bishop, will now be without its base, it should not surprise us that Black will soon crash through in the centre. After a move like 21.Nd4 g4! is strong in spite of White’s 22.Qh6+ possibilities: 22...Nh7 23.Qxh5 Ndf6 24.Qh6 d5! with major problems for White.

21...hxg4 22.hxg4 Rg6

The rook heads for h6, where it can play a part in an attack on the enemy king.

The very strongest move in this position is 22...d5! and only after 23.exd5 to go for the rook lift 23...Rg6!: 24.Ne2 b5!–+
